Cinco de Mayo DUI enforcement

Cinco De Mayo is often associated with going to the bars and celebrating in Arizona. Thousands of party goers will head to bars this weekend and on Tuesday in order to celebrate. It is important to remember that with an increase in people who are out drinking there are often an increase in DUIs. Going out to celebrate the holiday without having an idea of how you are going to get home could land you in jail.

Local Law Enforcement respond to this increase in DUIs by increasing the numbers of patrols on Cinco De Mayo. Last year 500 individuals were arrested for suspicion of DUI in 2014 according to KTAR News. These arrests were made by a DUI task force which included 1,881 officers state wide.

This year the task force is expected to be larger, and in many locations patrols began on Friday and go through Tuesday night. Cities in the Phoenix metro area such as Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, and Peoria have plans in place for their DUI task force. Many other cities through the state have also set plans in place to deal with the holiday DUIs including Tucson and Flagstaff.

Arizona has harsh penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol. These penalties range in severity based on the blood alcohol level of the driver, and whether the driver has had any previous DUI convictions. Despite these differences in penalties, you could still face jail time and expensive fines if you are found to be driving under the influence of Alcohol.
